What are PSD2, SCA, and 3DS2?
These are three terms you might see when paying for a transfer, and they all relate to keeping your payments secure.
PSD2 is an EU regulation that requires payment providers to use stronger checks when you pay online. This stronger check is called SCA, or strong customer authentication. 3DS2 is the technology that banks and card networks, like Visa and Mastercard, use to carry out this check.
In short, these rules exist to confirm it's really you making the payment, and to help prevent fraud. You can read more about the regulation on the European Commission's website.
What does this mean when I pay?
To confirm your identity, your bank will ask you to verify at least two of the following:
- Something you know, like a password, PIN, or secret answer
- Something you have, like a code sent to your phone
- Something you are, like your fingerprint or face
With Taptap Send, it doesn't matter which version of 3D Secure your bank uses. You might be asked to confirm the payment in your banking app, enter a one time code sent by SMS, or use a card reader. The method depends on your bank.
For an example of how this works in practice, see how Nationwide handles these checks.
What should I do?
To avoid any delays when paying:
- Make sure your contact details are up to date with your bank
- Download your bank's app and turn on notifications, so you can verify payments quickly
