What is a mobile wallet?

A mobile wallet is a digital account linked to a mobile phone number. It lets your recipient receive money without needing a bank account.

How does a mobile wallet work?

Mobile wallets are offered by mobile network providers such as MTN, Airtel, Orange Money, M-Pesa, bKash, JazzCash, GCash and Wave, among others.

All your recipient needs is a mobile phone and an active wallet account with a supported provider. When you send money to their mobile wallet, the funds usually arrive within minutes and appear in their wallet balance.

What can your recipient do with the money?

Once the money arrives, your recipient can:

  • Withdraw cash at a nearby mobile money agent
  • Pay bills
  • Buy airtime or data
  • Send money to friends and family

There are millions of mobile money agents across our destination countries, so your recipient should be able to find one nearby.

Which countries support mobile wallets?

Mobile wallets are available in most of our destination countries. The providers we support, as well as sending and recipient limits, vary by country.

To see the mobile wallet options available for your recipient's country and the applicable limits, check the dedicated page for their destination country in our Help Centre, or start a transfer in the app and select their location.
